Xagu Qoma joined the Kuru Art Project at the end of 2025. She is the daughter of the late artist Xaga Tcuixgao, who passed away in 2025 and whose creative legacy has had a profound influence on Xagu’s artistic development. Mother and daughter shared a close bond, often engaging in extended conversations about art, materials, and creative process. These exchanges sparked Xagu’s early curiosity and led her to ask whether she might one day explore artistic practice herself. From a young age, Xagu was actively drawn to her mother’s work. She recalls secretly handling and examining her mother’s crafts and beadwork, attempting to understand their construction and experimenting with making her own pieces. These formative experiences laid an intuitive foundation for her later artistic pursuits. Following her mother’s passing, Xagu made a conscious decision to continue this artistic lineage. She first tried out oil painting, initially approaching the medium with uncertainty and hesitation. However, she soon discovered a natural affinity for painting, finding the process both intuitive and deeply engaging. Her development revealed an evident talent, particularly in her instinctive use of color and her ability to construct compelling compositions. Xagu’s subject matter is strongly informed by her cultural heritage. She is especially drawn to motifs such as carved animals and traditional beadwork—forms that captivated her from an early age and continue to serve as central visual and conceptual references in her work. Through her practice, she both honors her mother’s legacy and asserts her own emerging artistic voice.
